Walney airfield is situated on Walney Island which lies adjacent to the town of Barrow-in-Furness, in south Cumbria, England. It is currently owned by BAE Systems, formerly Vickers Shipbuilders, who operate flights to various UK destinations during the week, using two Beechcraft Kingair B200 aircraft. At the weekend The Lakes Gliding Club operate when the weather conditions are favourable and various based light aircraft often fly throughout the week. There are occasional visitors, although the airfield is strictly PPR. Recent work has been undertaken to install an Instrument Landing System (ILS) for runway 35, Resurface and Re-light runway 17/35, and erect Security Fencing around the entire airfield. This was part of a wider program of general improvement (new signage etc).

2005 saw the first major air show to be held in Barrow, taking place on Walney Airfield, and it was a spectacular success. Find out more by accessing the Walney Airshow page on this site. Use the links above to access general histories of three former wartime airfields in South Cumbria. These airfields are Cark, Millom and Barrow/Walney Island. The airfield details page refers to Walney airfield and the images page is devoted to all three sites.
